Ensuring compatibility between VMware Cloud Director Availability (VCDA) 4.7.3 and VCD 10.6.0.1 is critical for delivering a seamless disaster recovery service. In my experience, several compatibility-related issues can arise during deployment.
1. Unsupported API Calls:
Issue: Certain API calls fail due to mismatched versions of VCDA and VCD.
Scenario: A provider reported that scheduled DR workflows stopped working after upgrading VCD to 10.6.0.1.
Solution: Always refer to VMware’s Interoperability Matrix before upgrading either component. In this case, upgrading VCDA to 4.7.3 resolved the issue.
2. Recovery Workflow Errors:
Issue: Recovery workflows fail with errors related to VM registration.
Scenario: During a failover, the target site’s vCenter server displayed errors about insufficient resources.
Solution: Validate that the target site has adequate compute, storage, and network resources for the recovered workloads. Pre-provisioning resources can help avoid this issue.
3. Failback Challenges:
Issue: Failback operations fail to complete successfully.
Solution: Check the replication direction and ensure that all network and storage mappings are bidirectional. Additionally, verify that the failback policies in VCDA match those configured in VCD.
